The Lansing Board of Water and Light is alerting customers of a phone scam that asks for their credit card information.

At least two customers have received telephone calls from scam impostors threatening to turn off their electric service if they did not provide credit card information or make wire payments through Western Union or Money Gram.

The scam calls show up on caller I.D. from "313-427-0362" - a metro-Detroit area code. This same number has appeared in scam alerts issued by the Marquette Board of Light and Power in the Upper Peninsula.

BWL customers are never asked by BWL customer service representatives for credit card information over the phone or in person, or to make payments through a wire service like Western Union or Money Gram. BWL customers have the option of "customer-initiated" credit card payments through a secure Intranet site or secure automated voice payment system.

Customers are urged to report suspicious activity to BWL customer service at 517-702-6006 or local police.
