JACKSON (WILX)-- An emotional day in court as a woman accused of killing her 27-day-old daughter has her preliminary hearing.

Amanda Redman from the Jackson area is being charged with involuntary manslaughter of her baby. In the courtroom on Thursday she wept as both the medical examiner and a detective testified against her.

"She said that she was stunned and looking for the infant and realized it was underneath her," said Blackman Township Detective Joseph Merritt.

Police were called to Amanda's home at 6:30 am on April 2nd. Amillia Redman was only 27 days old when Merritt found her unresponsive.

"There was no pulse and no respiration. The infant was a blueish gray color, and was not moving."

Merritt says it wasn't clear what caused the baby's death until Amanda herself admitted that she may have played a part in it.

"She said she got up and started feeding the infant and must have fell asleep and rolled over on it."

He said Amanda also admitted to drinking half-a-fifth of whiskey earlier that night.

"During my contact I felt necessary to ask if she had been drinking at all. I could smell an intoxicating liquor coming from her person."

Evidence presented at the preliminary hearing also suggested that Redman forgot to feed her baby the night of it's death.

Medical examiner Dr, Pacris confirmed that the cause of death was suffocation. While he didn't find any signs of trauma to the baby's face he did find evidence proving the suffocation in her lungs.

The case will be going to trial. The date has yet to be determined. Redman is currently out on bond.

At the trial Redman will be accused of involuntary manslaughter, and child abuse of the second degree.
