Jackson Tackles Gangs, Guns

Jackson Police say the violence that's been plaguing the city's southside since the summer may have to do with feuding gangs. And they believe that feud could be behind Thursday's murder of 19-year-old Mike Adams.

"Some of the people involved, including the victim, have been involved in shots fired in the past few months," says acting Lt. Elmer Hitt of the Jackson Police Department.

According to the Jackson police nixle web site, since October 26 there have been 20 calls of shots fired, including Thursday's murder and the November shooting of a teenage girl while she slept in bed. Ten of those reports have been in the past three weeks.

Hitt says the abundant gun violence has led the department to set up a task force to reduce crime that has neighbors on edge.

"There's always people coming in here, worried about the neighborhood," says Eugene Johnson, president of St. John's United Church of Christ in Jackson.

"If it keeps going, it'll be out of hand and people won't want to come here. That concerns me," Johnson says.

Though community concern is mounting in the area, Johnson says the big issue is that the young men and women participating in the violence are people who feel no connection to the community.

"They're not involved. They don't care," he says.

The Jackson task force has been around for about a month-and-a-half and is partnering with JNET, Jackson County and the ATF. Police say they've made some arrests but won't say how many.

Jackson is like a hole if you get sucked in its impossible for most to get out. The ones born and raised in Jackson know no other way of life. Everyone thinks they are the next hard core rapper. Shouldn't there be a law about learning how to speak proper english. Plus the freaks that wear there pants down to their knees need to goto jail for indescent exposure. That could help some of the problems.

R.I.P MIKE...I believe that Jackson is the poor, low down, crime infested, mini-D it is because think about it, all these poor people means more government help which means more government control, which means less freedom overall. I guarantee you, if Jackson was the same size of Detroit, it would have 10 times the crime rate. I do wish as so many others that Jackson would prosper, but I'm sorry to say, it most likely will not.

Think god something is finally being done about the gun violence in Jackson. My family lives on Chittock street and I have bullet holes in my home,it is so sad that my children are getting use to it . my childern know when its a holiday like The Fourth of July or New Years Eve we say our prayers that no more bullets hit our home and that our loveones are safe .And to take cover stay low and we hope and pray that everything will be okay.I wish the police would move into the old police house on chittock it would make the neighborhod much safer and keep the drug dealers off the street .The drug dealers are so bold they will sell drugs right infront of you even if your walking with your kids. My family plans on moving asap. It's just too much to deal with.

Can we hire a few of the local south side residents to assist the new guns & gangs task force? Seems like a two-fer. Get good folks to work, in an area with which they have working knowledge. Get criminals off the street.

Quit addressing the results of the problem and start addressing the lack of mentors and leaders in the community. Marty Griffen, jerry Ludwig and Karen Dunigan all lack the ability to build a community.

R.i.p Mike Adams, its not about the justice here, to them mike was just another problem off the streets he wasnt a gang member or nothing like that, there isnt even a real gang set in jackson they all go by whats on tv and thats the problem with america and jackson now there quick to assume he was gang related and that was the cause of death but it wasnt i live on the southside of jackson and it gets very wild and i believe its because the police here just worry about there paychecks not justice. i went to school with mike adams and he wasnt like the big bad kid from around the block he was if anything another teenager caught in jackson choke-hold!!!!!

Get rid of them in one city they'll go to another.Just like drugs.Find ways to totally stop them so they don't spread. They are worse than animals.Their is no name for them but killers, drug dealers, trouble makers of many things.Do not need to be left in the public.Rehab programs don't work for many.Loosers that won't change.Crime is getting worse because of poverty.Get jobs in Mi to fund the take outs of crime, gangs, and drugs or killers.People have had enough.

Get rid of gangs any way possible. They are causing way to many problems from drugs to killings. They may think they have rights to do as they please but are causing trouble.Crack down before it is to late.Get them out of the public.Gang free america, drug free america, even now smoke free america is the plan.Nothing gets done fast enough,or at all.To get anything done we need Better government america and that hasn't happen.Gov has so much evil in it it is no longer helping america. Now lets see how far getting rid of gangs does. All talk,no action.Yet we can go to wars in other countries to clean them up and not clean up america.Heck we can't even keep jobs in america. We can say alot about america. At least all the problems we have now because to many heads were turned in the past about many things. All the stupid things that have been done by the gov to cause these problems as well.
