Residents here in the southwest part of Jackson aren't very familiar with crime.

"This area of the city historically has our lowest crime rate," said Jackson Police Deputy Chief John Holda.

But, he adds, a string of break-ins across that part of Jackson have cracked that silence.

"Over the last several weeks, we've experienced seven break-ins in the southwest part of the town; all the break-ins have been occurring in residences," said Holda.

Police say the thieves get in and out quickly, and are generally out for spare cash or jewelry -- it's a spree that's left some residents a bit shocked.

"Suprising," says Don Jones, a 20-year resident of the neighborhood. "I really haven't noticed anything at all."

And others a bit concerned.

"It makes me nervous," said one resident on Crescent Drive, where one of the break-ins took place. "Especially 'cause I thought this was a pretty safe part of town."

Jackson Police say they're stepping up efforts to ease those fears. They've increased foot patrols in the area and are getting out the message to folks about how to protect their homes.

"Keep your doors and windows locked when you're not at home. Let your neighbors know if you're going to be gone for an extended period of time," he advises.

Residents here have taken that message to heart, with many saying they've been more vigilant about locking their doors and windows. Some have installed security systems or placed dead bolts on their doors.

Holda says the good news is, Jackson Police believe all seven break-ins are linked to just one thief or a group acting in tandem. That should make targeting the perpetrators a bit easier.

Something folks here in this neighborhood are happy to hear.
