It was about 9:00 pm Sunday when store clerk Ali was stocking the cooler at the Citgo station on the 3600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Lansing. He heard the doorbell, turned around and saw a man with a gun, dressed in a black hoodie and wearing a black bandanna over his face. He says, "I saw somebody with a gun, a covered face and black hoodie."
Security cameras captured what happened next. The man charged Ali and put the gun to his head. Ali says, "He tried to shoot me, I said, no, no, don't do it. Just take whatever you want."
However, Ali says the suspect didn't listen and appeared to try to shoot him. He says, "When he was done pulling the trigger, I grabbed it, and moved it out of my face my head and then he shot the cooler right here and it went through this wall."
After that, Ali said the gun was either out of bullets or jammed. That's when a physical fight began. Ali says, "He hit me on the head. I tried to cover my head with both arms and he was hitting me with the gun....I got scratches and he ripped my skin off right here and he was hitting me with his gun and I have a bump like an egg."
After the suspect drug Ali out of the door, he fled the scene. Police arrived shortly after and began searching for the suspect. Now police are checking out the store security footage to see if they can get anymore leads on the suspect. Lt. Mike Yankowski says they are still analyzing the tapes and are also looking for any tips from the public.
Yankowski says if you find yourself in Ali's situation, comply with what the suspect wants. He says money and property are not worth your life.
Meanwhile, Ali says he'd like to see more security for small businesses in the area to stop a growing wave of crime he's now witnessed first hand. Lansing police ask that if you have any information that could help, call 911 or send an anonymous tip via text at TIP-411.
