A 49-year-old man is dead after witnesses say he started a fire in a Detroit apartment building before being fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire with police.
The Sunday afternoon confrontation happened after the man fired at three people from an apartment unit, wounding two of them. Sgt. Eren Stephens Bell says the injuries to the 49-year-old man and 50-year-old female weren't life-threatening.
Stephens says the man ran to the basement when police arrived and shots at two officers before being shot himself. She says it isn't clear whether one or both of the officers shot the man.
Stephens says the cause of the fire is undetermined. But Don Johnson tells The Detroit News he saw the gunman with a gasoline can after an earlier argument with tenants.
