Sheriff's deputies are investigating a possible murder-suicide at the Plumtree Apartments in Delta Township, where they say a mother likely took the life of her two sons-- and then her own.
Eaton County Sheriff Mike Raines says they received a call around 5:20 p.m. from the father, who had just returned home from work to find his wife and two elementary-school-aged sons dead. He called the authorities right away.
"We're looking at it with any possibilities, but we think it's a murder-suicide," Raines says.
Raines says the husband is being questioned, but not being kept in custody.
He won't say how the woman and her two sons died, but that this crime is unusual and heartbreaking.
"Anytime we have a situation like this with kids and family, it's very unfortunate," he says.
"That's crazy. It just hurts my little soul," says Diandra Garcia, who lives across the street. She has an eight-year-old son who plays with boys that live in the building where the murders happened. She's waiting to find out if the children who were killed are indeed her son's friends.
"How do you tell a child their friends are not here no more?" Garcia says. "It's sad to know a mother has taken the lives of children on top of herself."
The sheriff is staying tightlipped about why exactly they believe this is a murder-suicide. The bodies are being taken to Sparrow Hospital, where autopsies will be performed. Authorities are waiting to identify the victims until all family has been notified.
