Officer expected to recover but it will be a long process.

On the scene in Dewitt

The DeWitt Township police officer shot Thursday morning is expected to face a long recovery process. DeWitt city Police Chief Larry Jerue tells wilx.com the officer has severe damage to his pallet and tongue. He took a bullet through the cheek, which broke his jaw before exiting through his neck. He will be hospitalized for quite some time, according to Jerue. The officer, whose name we've chosen not to release for now, was backing up DeWitt city police when a shoot-out started on DeWitt Road. Police say the gunman was 47 year old Nathan Oakes, who'd driven from Florida to DeWitt to kill his ex-wife. Oakes was shot and killed by police at the scene.

My heart is heavy for this officer and his family...how much we citizens take for granted the service these men and women perform, and the daily risks they take. This man took a bullet for someone else, literally. This man's life and family are now forever changed in a split second. Its a tragedy for everyone involved. We as a public do not commend our officers enough for what they do. So let me be the first to speak. Officer Darnell, I thank you for what you do and wish you a full and speedy recovery!! You are in my prayers and thoughts...
