LANSING (WILX)-- Conner McCowan broke down on the witness stand Thursday as he described the night he stabbed his friend to death.

McCowan is on trial for murder, and claims he only killed Andrew Singler in self-defense.

It started after McCowan's sister, Singler's girlfriend, told her brother Singler had beaten her.

McCowan said when he got to Singler's apartment to confront him about the situation, it was Andrew who attacked him.

"I was terrified. I thought he was going to kill me. I've never seen him that mad. -- I tried to get him off me. I grabbed my knife out of my pocket, and I just went like that. (Made slashing motions) I just needed him off me, I tried to get him off me," said Conner McCowan.

McCowan said he armed himself on the way to the apartment when Singler sent him a text that read "Great, Hurry up. So I can .... kill you."

"I was a little nervous and worried. He said that he was going to kill me," said McCowan.

But McCowan admitted in court that he did more than arm himself. He unfolded the knife, and put it back in his pocket before confronting Singler.

What happened after he cut at Singler was confusion said McCowan.

"He crossed his hands over his chest and backed into the apartment. I went into the apartment to check on him and he was lying there and I saw blood. Tyler (the roommate) put his hands up and said dude run.-- I ran. I didn't know what to do," said McCowan.

Mccowan said he left the scene not knowing how seriously Singler was hurt, but while he was driving home he threw the knife out on Lansing Road. He told the court he didn't know why he did that.

I was disorientated, confused and my head hurt really bad," said McCowan.

McCowan's mother also took the stand Thursday, testifying about what Conner told her after the incident.

"He told me that he thought he was going to be killed and was going to die. He got out his knife and cut him," said Judy McCowan.

At the time of McCowan's arrest she said she could hardly believe that her son was being charged with murder.

"Utter shock. I was shaking, and in disbelief. "

Conner McCowan will continue his testimony on Friday.
