General Motors' top product executive says the race between GM and Toyota to produce a rechargeable car is meaningless because the companies' vehicles are so different.

GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz says Toyota's plug-in hybrid has a much shorter electric range than the Chevrolet Volt and must use a gasoline engine to go any farther.

Toyota's president pledged on Thursday to bring his company's plug-in hybrid to market in 2009, while the Volt is due in showrooms in late 2010.

But Lutz says he expects Toyota's plug-in will be debut in controlled fleets and not in large numbers. He says GM will have production versions of the Volt working in a large test fleet in late 2009.

Lutz was speaking at an event in Illinois where GM showed reporters its 2009 model lineup.

How far can a VW go on a tank of gas and what does that amount of gas cost?Bring down gas prices and stop that greed. So food and all other things blamed on high gas prices can come down.Do thoes invested want to do that?Lets keep saying ethnol and keep food prices and farmers prices up.Bottom line, lets just ruin america and cause more hardships for families and get more into proverty. Then we can change to socialist government and have more control over the people. We see what has happen to mich with someone running it with a socialist background. Not working is it?Just think what the usa would be like under that type of gov?Who knows what the final fuel will be to run cars on.The cheapest.Who knows what the gov won't allow may be our biggest problem.
