The Census Bureau says the percentage of Michigan residents below the poverty level rose in 2007 for the third consecutive year, while the median household income fell.
According to data released Tuesday, 14 percent of people in Michigan were below the poverty level in 2007. That was up from 13.5 percent in 2006 and 13.2 percent in 2005.
The Census Bureau says Michigan was the only state with a higher poverty rate in 2007 than the previous year.
Meanwhile, median household income in the state was $47,950, down from the inflation-adjusted median of $48,546 in 2006.
The figures underscore the economic downturn in Michigan, where the auto industry's struggles have had a ripple effect across the state.

I work 40 hrs. a week. I get insurance 401K and other perks. What I need the most is a pay raise. Because $24,000 a year won't raise a family of 5.

Lansing has never looked better, we look good for all of the business' that are coming in by the drove.holt is looking good too the new park with arches ,gives a new place for un-employees to sit.the food banks are empty as well, but the board of water man got his well earned raise. if these knott heads keep it up they won't have anyone left to serve them, or are they supposted to us,the people.if we go down who will pay their saleries?

When oil went up and caused high gas prices, causeing everything else to go up.The pay checks did not go up.Our pay checks only buy half of what they did.20,500$ a yr is considered proverty level. When all went up what did thoes checks buy? Many are way below proverty level now.So many are proverty level. It only makes sense.Which what does a 40,000 $income buy now?So keep prices going up and not wages.Keep more jobs leaving and laying off.Welfare is a worse than proverty suitition.Thoes ones don't pay taxes.More are being forced on it all the time.Who will pay taxes to keep Mich going? To get taxes there has to be jobs all over mich.Where are they?Is the state counting on the richer ones to cover all taxes?Who's paying all the taxes on all the empty homes? The banks holding the forclosers? How will many bussiness surrive when people just can't afford to shop at them? Why did we elect jenn for a second term? What other ststes did she serve in?Who gets her next? This is the worse mich has been.
