The Grand Rapids Police Department has received a fuel-efficient gift.

Steelcase heir and philanthropist Peter Wege presented the department with a 2005 Ford Escape hybrid sport utility vehicle. The $27,000 vehicle runs on both gasoline and electricity. It will be used to enforce parking laws.

Wege, whose father co-founded officer furniture maker Steelcase in 1912, hopes the SUV will increase the visibility of hybrids in Michigan's second-largest city.

Police Chief Harry Dolan says the city will evaluate whether more hybrids should be purchased for other non-emergency purposes.
