High pressure will continue to prevail across much of the East on Thursday with generally dry and calm conditions. Another area of high pressure will slide southeastward from central Canada into the Midwest throughout the day, strengthening high pressure already in place across the region. Expect colder air to accompany this system into the Northern Plains and northern Minnesota, while a fairly dry cold front passes through the Minnesota and and the Upper Great Lakes, just ahead of the system. Due to limited moisture across the Upper Mississippi Valley and the Upper Great Lakes, only a few light snow showers will be possible near western Lake Superior.
To the south, upper level energy will take shape over the Southeast on Thursday and will kick up light to moderate scattered showers and thunderstorms from Georgia and parts of northern Florida through the Carolinas.
Out West, a Pacific storm system located west of the California coast will progress toward the Golden State on Thursday with chances of showers. Rainfall is expected to move to the central coast by the evening hours and will spread inland to the valleys Thursday night into Friday morning. Local rainfall amounts with this system could get up to a half of an inch in urban locations, especially near the coast and around the bays.
