Even in the Great Lakes region, people are fighting over water. Shoreline property owners and marina operators on part of Lake Huron say water levels have been abnormally low for more than a decade. They want the government to help bring levels higher. But people living along the southeastern coast of Lake Michigan disagree. They fear higher water on Lake Huron would cause flooding and erosion in Lake Michigan. The debate is prompting the United States and Canada to consider an ambitious effort to control Great Lakes water levels. A panel of experts will release a study Wednesday. The group has considered several options, from minor tinkering to a massive $8 billion engineering project that would try to control all five Great Lakes.
