Snow and rain continues in the East on Wednesday as a late-season winter storm treks through the Mid-Atlantic and heads offshore into the western Atlantic Ocean. As the system progresses, expect snow to taper off in the Ohio Valley, while mixed precipitation with moderate to heavy, accumulating wet snowfall blankets the Central Appalachians and portions of the northern Mid-Atlantic. This mixture will spread into the Northeast through the day. Snowfall totals at the lower elevations are expected to reach up to 4 to 8 inches, while higher elevations may see up to 12 inches, with 12 to 16 inches possible on ridge tops in the Central Appalachians. High accumulation rates will make snow removal difficult and lead to dangerous travel conditions. In addition to snow, winds gusting in excess of 40 mph will create periods of blowing and drifting snow, leading to reduced visibilities and heightened dangerous travel conditions. Meanwhile, coastal flooding will remain a concern for the Mid-Atlantic and New England coasts through Thursday. As the storm heads eastward and moves off the coast by Wednesday night, strong winds are expected to build waves of up to 15' and a 2 - 4' storm surge along the coasts of Delaware, New Jersey, and New York. Runoff down rivers from heavy rain associated with this storm will also increase water levels along the coast. This setup may lead to moderate flooding in these coastal regions. Out West, more rain and high elevation snow is anticipated in the Northwest and parts of northern and central California.
