Mathis Leads at Travelers

David Mathis, who missed the cut at the U. S. Open last week, has the first round lead at the PGA's Travelers Championship which began Thursday in Cromwell, Conn. Mathis was 6 under through the first 6 holes, then finished with a 6 under 64. He made a hole in one along the way. U. S. Open champion Webb Simpson is two shots back. Simpson is announced he will skip the British Open next month because of the birth of a second child by his wife Dowd.
