Kalamazoo's Brett Kelpin, playing in his first pro event, tied the tournament record with a 23 under par total to win the Michigan Open golf championship at the Orchards Course in Washington Township. Kelpin, an all Big Ten senior at Iowa, led wire to wire and fired a 68 on the final day Thursday to beat Grosse Ile's Jeff Cuzzort, the runner up, by 8 shots. Kelpin's total ties Chick Harbert's record set in 1948. He won $8,000. Former Spartans Ryan Brehm and Randy Hutchison, the defending champ, were the best local finishers, tying for 14th place at 5 under par and each won $1,050.
