Jackson City Council Considering Gay Rights Law

JACKSON, Mich. (AP) -- The Jackson City Council is considering legislation to extend civil rights protection to people based on their sexual orientation.
The council's city affairs committee is taking up the proposal. So far, no hearings have been scheduled.
The proposal that the council sent to the committee last Tuesday would protect people from discrimination based on their sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression in the areas of housing, employment and public accommodations.
The advocacy group Equality Michigan is praising the action and urges voters to "communicate their support of the ordinance" to council members.
