A Michigan public school district plans to do away with fees parents pay to allow their children to participate in sports. The Livingston County Daily Press and Argus of Howell reports that the elimination of pay-to-play fees is part of the Howell Public Schools proposed budget. The school board is expected to approve the budget after a public hearing this evening. A number of districts across the state have implemented pay-to-play policies as funding once used to buy equipment and pay for athletic programs has dried up. Howell Public Schools generate $129,000 each year with the fees. The district is expected to have a fund balance this year. Superintendent Ron Wilson says if the district can afford the fees "why should parents pay" them.
