At a press conference, Friday, Sparrow Health Systems and the Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic announced a partnership that will allow Sparrow physicians to have direct access to Mayo physicians and resources as part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
"What we're doing is we're trying to pay for, essentially, computer access to their physicians and database", said Sparrow President and CEO, Dennis Swan.
Sparrow is the first hospital in the state, and fifth hospital in the country, to become a member of the network.
After a rigorous application process, this membership will allow Sparrow patients to have the world-class treatment of the Mayo Clinic free of charge, all while staying close to home.
"If we can get to know people in distant communities that allows us to remain relevant so if they need care for very complex issues, hopefully Mayo Clinic will be the name they think of", said David Hayes, M.D., Medical Director of the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
The Mayo Clinic is widely regarded as one of the best hospitals in the world.
