LANSING - A Lansing man is in the hospital with serious to life threatening injuries after being shot on Lansing's southside Friday afternoon.

The shooting took place around 2:30 p.m. The shooting victim, a male in his mid-twenties, was located in a bullet riddled car near the intersection of Max Avenue and Williams Street, which is just west of MLK Blvd and Malcolm X Street.

Just minutes before, police were called to a report of shots being fired between vehicles traveling northbound on Waverly Road near Holmes Road. They said the call came from a victim in a car.

"A vehicle, a silver van, pulled up next to them, and several rounds were discharged toward the vehicle," said Lansing Police Captain Mike Yankowski.

That vehicle has at least six bullet holes now. Police say the victim was the front seat passenger. His driver headed straight to the hospital, but police caught up with them first.

"The front seat passenger had been injured due to gunfire," Captain Yankowski said. "So, we pulled him over to make sure that we could render any first aid assitance, contact the Lansing Fire Department, and they transported him to a local hospital."

A neighbor said the driver was a pregnant woman and was not at all the target, but police are not confirming that yet.

"I feel bad for her," said Crystal Alexander. "There's quite a few bullet holes in the car right now, so I could see, they shot on his side. They weren't intentionally trying to hurt her, but something with him."

Police say it's too early to determine a motive, but it does appear this particular man was the target.

Alexander said incidents like this aren't uncommon in the neighborhood.

"I live in that area, and I hear it all the time," Alexander said. "I'm like - what? Ok no, those weren't firecrackers."

Police say they're looking for a silver van-type vehicle and two male suspects in the their mid-twenties. The public is encouraged to contact Lansing Police if you have any information to offer.
