Authorities say a squirrel got into an electrical substation, causing a blackout that forced Hudson High School to turn to backup generators for its graduation ceremony.
CMS Energy Corp. spokesman Tim Pietryga says the outage hit about 1,900 of the company's customers from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
That forced Hudson school officials to scramble, bringing in generators so the 2 p.m. graduation could go ahead as scheduled.
Superintendent Michael Osborne jokingly reassured the audience that the district did pay its electricity bill.
Among those who came to the rescue was Hudson High Principal Lance Horwath, who went from church in Adrian to a store to buy floodlights.
He says it's been "one of the more memorable graduations of all time."
