Michigan to Reopen Muskegon Prison, Move Ryan Inmates

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- State officials plan to reopen the Muskegon Correctional Facility this fall while turning the Ryan Correctional Facility into housing for parole violators and moving the Tuscola Residential Re-entry program there.
The Michigan Department of Corrections unveiled the changes Thursday. It expects to gain 400 beds in Detroit for parole violators and save transporting them to Jackson.
Reopening the Muskegon prison will add 300 medium-security beds statewide and 78 prison jobs. More than 1,000 inmates now in Ryan will be moved to other sites.
Michigan Corrections Organization executive director Mel Grieshaber says he worries some corrections officers will have to move long distances to remain guards.
Democratic Rep. Glenn Anderson of Westland says Ryan should remain open so jobs aren't lost. He proposes reopening Detroit's shuttered Mounds prison for parolees.
