Harrison Road Closes Monday For Reconstruction

Starting Monday, drivers in East Lansing will see yet another closure on Harrison Road near Michigan State University.

The road will be shut down from Mount Hope to Trowbridge through late July.

This marks the third summer parts of Harrison have seen closures.

"You work around it," Chuck Breen, Manager of Goodrich's Shop-Rite said.

Goodrich's sits at the corner of Harrison and Trowbridge, making it no stranger to construction.

"We're putting up fliers and we have a little sign in front of our store that shows the detour route," Breen added.

East Lansing began reconstructing Harrison in the summer of 2010. This summer, crews are completing the project.

The final near $1.2 million phase includes paving, added sidewalks, new curb and gutter and sewer work.

"It could be crazy, I'm a student, so I'm leaving, I'm getting out of here," Chris Smith said of traffic congestion.

East Lansing's Public Works Director says timing is key with this project. While construction crews were ready to begin work a month ago, they decided to wait until MSU's graduation weekend had passed, to avoid traffic problems.

Crews will also make sure work is completed before students return in late July.

Goodrich's is glad to hear it. Though construction hurt business last summer, the store sees roadwork as a necessity.

"It's a fact of life and we want our roads to be nice and smooth," Breen added.

The City of East Lansing says it will keep detours clearly marked and as consistend as possible. Drivers however, should be prepared for those routes to change as the summer progresses.
