MANISTEE, Mich. (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard says a large ship has run aground in Lake Michigan near the shore off Manistee.
The Coast Guard says there were 17 people aboard the Invincible, 120 miles north of Grand Rapids. Petty Officer George Degener says they are safe and not at risk. The ship is not in danger of tipping over.
The ship's grounding Saturday damaged a shaft in the engine room, causing it to take on water at a rate of two gallons per minute. The Coast Guard says virtually all the water has been pumped out. The vessel's owner is sending divers to evaluate the damage.
The Invincible is described as a combination of tugboat and barge and is nearly 600 feet long.
