Mich. Student Govt President Released From Jail

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) -- The new president of student government at Northern Michigan University will keep his job, despite some time in jail for having chickens and other offenses.

Ben Stanley spent four nights in jail until he was released Friday by a Marquette judge. He was supposed to be locked up for 10 days for contempt of court.

Judge Roger Kangas says Stanley's troubles weren't solely related to the chicken, which can't be possessed within Marquette's city limits. The Mining Journal, citing court records, (http://bit.ly/HIwKrK ) says Stanley missed court hearings and had taken months to clear up fines for other tickets.

The judge told him "it gets a little offensive after a while." But he showed some mercy and released the student from jail so Stanley wouldn't miss two exams next week.
