The Michigan High School Athletic Association has approved exceptions to its age requirement in certain circumstances.
Students are generally not allowed to play in high school sports after the age of 18.
However, the MSHAAA will now grant exceptions if a student has been held back in school prior to ninth grade.
Other requirements include having a documented disability that reduces their physical, and either intellectual or emotional capabilities.
The exception can also be given to students in seventh or eighth grades.
However, students still can only compete in high school athletics for a maximum of four years.
This new exception was brought about in the case of Eric Dompierre, a 19-year-old boy from Ishpeming with Down Syndrome who is seeking to play football and basketball in the upcoming seasons.
