UM Engineering Students Seek 3,300 MPG Vehicle

MARSHALL, Mich. (AP) -- University of Michigan engineering students are using a lawnmower engine to power a car they hope can travel 3,300 miles on a single gallon of gasoline.
A team of students and recent graduates has entered the 2012 Society of Automotive Engineers' International Supermileage Challenge.
It takes place Thursday and Friday at the Eaton Corp. proving grounds in Marshall.
Participating teams design and build single-person, fuel-efficient vehicles with small four-stroke engines.
The Michigan team is seeking to break the North American record of 3,169 miles per gallon.
Michigan team's entry uses a fuel injection system designed by mechanical engineering student Lihang Nong.
The injector is the focus of a startup called PicoSpray, which won the $20,000 second prize in the 2012 Michigan Clean Energy Venture Challenge.
