After a holiday weekend, commuters could be in for a longer daily commute on U.S. 127 around Frandor.

"Tuesday night we're going to push those two lanes over onto the median shoulder...so we can do our work on the far east side of the road," said Greg Losch, construction engineer for MDOT.

MDOT is starting a project to add a third lane to U.S. 127 between 496 and the Saginaw/Grand river exit. That exit will close during construction and all traffic will be detoured to the Kalamazoo street exit.

"This project will cut down on the congestion that takes place where east bound 496 merges onto 127," Losch said.

However. some commuters aren't too thrilled to hear about the exit shutting down and periodic lane closures.

"We weren't aware of that. It's going to be a much longer day that's for sure," said Suzie Schumacher.

Other commuters say they're looking forward to the end result.

"Ultimately, I think that if it's going to improve the situation in the long term, I mean it is a tight spot, so I think that'll be really positive," said East Lansing resident Erin Fritch.

One lane will remain closed at the 496 and 127 interchange throughout the construction period.

The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-August.
