Occupiers Rally Across Michigan On May Day

Posted: 1:15 AM May 2, 2012
Reporter: Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) -- About 300 people with ties to the Occupy Wall Street and labor movements have held a May Day march through Detroit to promote immigration law changes, educational improvements and worker rights.
The Kalamazoo Gazette says about 100 Kalamazoo students left class Tuesday for a protest that focused on Arizona's immigration crackdown.
The Detroit Free Press says the Detroit marchers had a brief standoff with police who asked them not to put up a tent in the city's downtown Grand Circus Park, site of an occupation last year.
The Detroit News says protesters plan a march Wednesday to the Coleman Young Municipal Center to oppose the city's recent financial consent agreement with the state. The deal includes commitments to sharp municipal spending cuts and is expected to result in widespread layoffs.
