LANSING - a bouncer has been charged with a felony in the death of a man outside a downtown Lansing bar New Year's Eve. Late Thursday afternoon Austin Smith, 31, of Grand Ledge, was charged with involuntary manslaughter for his alleged part in the death of Travis Peterson. That charge carries a potential 15 year prison sentence.

Smith was a bouncer at the Brannigan Brothers tavern along Washington Square. Police believe that Travis Peterson, 30, had been involved in an altercation outside the bar. He was found on the street bleeding from the head. Peterson was hospitalized in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries.

When asked whether any more people would be charged in the death, Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings said the matter remains under investigation.

Smith was released on a bond of 10% of $20,000. He has a preliminary examination scheduled for April 17.
