Crews Work To Clean Up Spilled Liquid Asphalt

One lane of U.S 127 southbound and one lane of U.S. 127 northbound is open as of Tuesday morning at 7 a.m.

Crews are still working to clean the thousands of gallons of liquid asphalt that spilled when a tanker rolled over Monday morning around 5 a.m.

The Ingham County Sheriff's Office says the driver of that tanker was headed north on 127, when he crossed the median and crashed. He was taken to Sparrow Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Crews on scene sawed a hole in the back and side of the truck to pump out the remaining asphalt, before righting the tanker.

The truck spilled about 8,500 gallons of CRPE, a liquid asphalt product, onto the grassy median. To keep the tar-like substance from getting into the water supply, environmental clean-up crews have to remove all the contaminated soil and replace it with fresh soil.

A contractor onsite told News 10 he was pleased with the crews' progress, but did not know exactly when the work would be done. A sheriff's deputy said the work will continue throughout the day, and maybe even into tomorrow.

Both sides of the highway were shut down until a little after 6 p.m. Monday night, when one northbound lane reopened. One southbound lane reopened at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.
