At a family press conference in September, Melvin Hobbs stood up for his brother, Matthew Macon, who was being accused of some serious crimes by police.
Now,, he's the one being accused.
His brother's attorney, Mike O'Briant, says Hobbs-- a felon himself-- committed two of the crimes Macon's standing trial for-- the murder of Sandra Eichorn and the assault of Linda Jackson.
"At this point, nothing surprises me," says Hobbs' and Macon's cousin Clifton Jackson.
We spoke to Jackson about the troubling position this defense puts the family in.
"There's nothing I can say except we want the truth to come out-- once the evidence is presented, I think that will happen."
O'Briant is trying to bring that evidence out little by little in court. Tuesday, he pressed Lansing Detective James Gill about Hobbs being a suspect in Karen Delgado Yates' death.
"Melvin Hobbs was not a suspect in that investigation," Gill says.
But for the other crimes, the answer is different.
"A suspect in other cases?" asks O'Briant.
"It's possible," Gill answers.
O'Briant asks experts if they'd run Hobbs' fingerprints to see if they match those at the crime scenes-- they have not. Jackson sits in court, wondering what's next for his family.
We asked Clifton who he's standing behind; he says "He's standing behind the truth," -- whatever that truth may be.
