It was an emotional moment for the law enforcement community when Blackman Township Officer Darin McIntosh paid respects Friday to fallen Jackson Police Officer James Bonneau.
"I think he needed that to be there with his friend with everything that happened," says Sgt. Richard White with Blackman Township Public Safety.
McIntosh and Bonneau responded to a domestic disturbance call in Jackson last Tuesday. Police say 63-year-old Elvin Potts opened fire killing Bonneau. Officer McIntosh fired back, eventually killing Potts.
"Anytime there is a death, you need to do an investigation and forward that to the prosecuting attorney's office," says Lt. Steven Rand from the Jackson County Sheriff's Dept.
Rand tells us the investigation is complete but won't be delivered to the prosectuors until Tuesday.
"They are the ones who will make the final decision on whether there are charges being sought, whether the shooting was justified," says Rand.
As for Officer McIntosh, he's still at Allegiance Hospital recovering from a gunshot wound to his thigh.
"He will remain there for about 7 days. He just started physical therapy, but they expect a full recovery," says White.
Sgt. White tells us community support has helped McIntosh cope with the loss.
"He seems to be doing really well spirit-wise. They expect a full recovery. He'll be out for a few months, but when he comes back, he'll be better than ever," says White.
Jackson City Police, the Sheriff's Department and Michigan State Police were involved in the investigation process. Lt. Rand says specific details of the case should be available to the public by Wednesday. Stay with News10 for continuing coverage of the Jackson shooting investigation.
