Travis Anders first saw the flames coming out of his neighbor's home in Onondaga at about 8:30 in the morning Tuesday. He says, "When I arrived, the house was fully involved all from the left side of the house."

Anders is also a firefighter. When he got to the home, he immediately ran to get the family out. He says, "I walked inside the kitchen and was yelling fire department...yelled it ten times....no one responded."

The fire captain says a mom and three children were sleeping in the home at the time the fire broke out. He says they were completely unaware of what was happening. Because of Anders, they finally woke up and ran to safety. Anders says, "They were definitely frantic, they were very startled. They were very grateful that I showed up to get them out of the house."

Rives Township Fire Captain Stu Smith says "Everyone's OK, we do have the Red Cross coming, the husband is out of town. He's not here, but the rest of the family is here and everybody's OK."

Smith says the home is likely a total loss. Anders is just grateful he was in the right place at the right time so everyone got out alive.

The South Central Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family. That chapter of the Red Cross covers Jackson and Hillsdale County.
