DURAND, SHIAWASSEE CO. - 4 homes are damaged, one of which is a total loss, after an overnight fire in Durand. The call came to the fire department just before 2 o'clock Wednesday morning. When firefighters arrived in the 200 block of McBride Street, the home was fully engulfed in flames. Two other neighboring homes caught fire and were seriously damaged, and a third had moderate damage to the siding.
The original house that caught fire collapsed in the flames. The Durand fire chief says no one was inside that house. One man lived in a neighboring home, and he was able to get out safely. Two of the other homes were abandoned.
The fire chief says the damage is severe and they have not determined cause or origin of the fire. The state fire marshal will be investigating. One firefighter twisted his ankle while fighting the blaze, but there are no other injuries. 6 fire companies were needed to put down the fires.
