Phone calls, door-knocking, hitting the pavement, passing out candy, and even a sharing a cold one with potential voters. All of those are ways front-runners in Michigan's 7th congressional district republican primary are canvassing the area in the last weekend before polls open.

Former representative Tim Walberg is fighting to return to the seat he held until being defeated in 2008 by current democratic representative Mark Schauer. And he says experience is his strength.

"I have a proven, conservative record. None of my opponents have ever held office or run for office," Walberg said.

Iraq war veteran Brian Rooney says he hopes that he could be a fresh face to Washington.

"We need new leadership in michigan, desperately," Rooney said. "We need people that have a solid record of service to their country but they're not tainted by D.C. I'm not a career politician. I did serve my country in the marine corp."

The men running in the Republican primary take almost the same stance on issues, but when it comes to how long they've lived in the district, it's the familiar name versus the new kid on the block.

"I would think that someone whose lived in the district for 32 years, raised his family here, represented the district in congress, as well as state legislature is probably better to represent the people," Walberg said.

Rooney disagrees.

"I've lived all over the place. But when my wife and I decided to make our home in michigan, I like to say that I'm a convert," Rooney said. "And they say that converts have the strongest faith."

Both candidates say it will be non-stop campaigning until Tuesday.
