On any given day at Ranney park, there are dozens of people, maybe more.

"A lot of kids use this park," Softball Parent Tammy Babinski said, "a lot."

The same goes for Davis Park on the other side of town. But, until Tuesday, no one knew there was a potential danger at both.

"TV 10 did give me a call and made me aware of the fact that at two of our facilities, we had recalled light posts," Murdock Jemerson, the city of Lansing's Parks and Recreation director said.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission's July list of recalls, the stadium lights at both parks -- made by the Whitco Company out of Texas -- have been recalled.

The CPSC says the poles can fracture at the base and fall over, eleven have so far nation-wide. This recall was news to the city when News Ten called, but immediate action was taken.

"We want to have safe facilities," Jemerson said. "It's why reacted immediately in getting a firm out there to do the testing."

By Wednesday, an engineering firm was hired to check the poles' stability -- six at Ranney, 12 at Davis.

"If they are defective, we will fix them," Jemerson said.

The result? All 18 lights check out.

Parents who we caught up with Wednesday at a softball game at Ranney said it's always better to be safe than sorry.

"Obviously if they have a problem with them some place else, they should take a look at them and double check," Parent Bill Cross said.

Jemerson tells News Ten the city will periodically check the light poles for cracks as per the CPSC's recommendation.
