For 87,000 Michiganders, this fourth of July holiday won't be a happy one.

"The extended unemployment benefits, all those people collecting under extended benefits, those will expire," said Susan Corbin, deputy director of the Department of Energy, Labor, and Economic Growth.

July 3rd is the end of the line for thousands of unemployed in this state. Corbin said it's all because congress could not come to an agreement.

"Whatever tier you are in, you will finish that and not go on to another federal tier," she said.

Senator Debbie Stabenow said the delay is not for lack of trying, it's the Republicans in the Senate that have blocked vote.

"We have been trying for nine weeks to overcome a Republican filibuster," Stabenow said. "We have the votes, but not a super majority that's needed."

In the mean time, thousands of people are falling through the cracks.

"These benefits are make or break for a lot of Michigan families," Corbin said.

With thousands of Michiganders coming off the unemployment rolls, the question is, are there jobs out there for them to fill?

According to Michigan Works, the answer is yes, especially in the health care industry and thanks to a temporary boost, there are also jobs within manufacturing.

But there aren't nearly enough they said, so job seekers have got to be realistic. For example, you may not make the salary you once did. You should also know what you specifically bring to the table, getting the most up-to-date training in your field is also good idea.

It's about standing out in a crowd -- one that continues to grow.

"It will be another 85,000 by the end of July that will run out of benefits," Corbin said.

That is unless Congress takes action.
