Things certainly got off to a rocky start Monday for the two democratic candidates for governor.

"This is ridiculous," Mayor Virg Bernero said after a warning light was not given to the candidates opening remarks. "You told us there would be a light, now you're cutting us off and it's not fair to either of us."

But after some minor technical difficulties were repaired, the restart went much smoother. Bernero immediately went on the offensive.

"His experience as CEO is really exactly what's wrong with Michgan's economy," Bernero said.

Speaker Andy Dillon, it seemed, spent most of his allotted time refuting the mayor's claims.

"A) I was not the CEO," Dillon said. "B) I fought for ten years to bring investment into Michigan."

The two men touched on several issues over the hour including the unanticipated surplus in the school aid fund -- both say it should stay put -- and Michigan's tax structure -- which they both said needs revision.

Where they disagree, the list is much longer.

Afterward the candidates reflected on the tone of the evening.

"I think the voters deserve more than that," Dillon said. "They deserve to know what we each stand for and how we are going to turn this state around."

"I don't mean to be impolite, but this election is choice between two people," Bernero said. "I want voters to know the difference between us."

This was the last debate before the primary. Both men said they plan to hit the campaign trail state-wide in the upcoming weeks.
