The push to bring Google - and its ultra-fast fiber optic network - to the greater Lansing area continues.

"We're well on our way to completing a very competitive municipal application," Nathan Triplett, East Lansing City Council Member, said.

Five local communities are working together on the application. A technology town hall was held Thursday at the Hannah Community Center in an effort to get the public on board too.

But some residents, like Judith Fryer admit, all this technical jargon can be confusing.

"I have email that's about it," Fryer said. "I'm not that computer savvy. I thought it would be interesting to see what "Google thing" is about."

In lay mans terms, most Americans broadband Internet, which may seem fast enough for some, but not according to Google. Imagine download speeds up to 100x faster which experts say could revolutionize how we use the Internet.

"When we have fiber optic connections from data centers to the home, it's infinite capacity," Jason Schreiber, president of Arialink, said.

Which will be great if Google actually picks Mid Michigan as the test site. Hundreds of communities are competing, one even vowed to rename their city after the Internet giant.

So how will Lansing set itself apart?

"We're making the case that we have all the attributes you'd want to pilot the program," Triplett said. "We're not looking for a gimmick to give us a leg up."

It's the hospitals, the colleges and universities, the location of the State Capitol even, which should be seal the deal Triplett said, as long as residents help make the case.

"It's really important that we get members of the community and organizations on board to submit application forms too," he said.

Applications must be submitted by March 26th.
