Call it cash for clunkers, but for appliances. Each state got Stimulus Money...

"It's called the Michigan Appliance Trade-Up Program and we're offering rebates for certain appliances," John Sarver of the department of energy, labor and economic growth said.

Starting Wednesday, those who update their old appliances and buy new energy efficient ones, will get a rebate from the government.

"Our rebates are for dishwashers, refrigerators, clothes washers, propane and oil furnaces and propane and solar water heaters," Sarver said.

So depending on what you trade in -- and what trade up to -- it could mean $25 to $300 dollars back in your pocket.

There's only a limited amount of money, so here's what you need to do:

-Go to the government's website to reserve your spot.

www.mirebates.com (for refrigerators, clothes washers and dishwashers)

-or-

www.michrebate.com (for furnaces and water heaters)

-Then head to the store of your choice to make your purchase.

-Then go back to the website to complete the form. The government will then send you a rebate card.

Scott Siemen, a sales representative at Sears, said a good way to find an appliance that qualifies, is to look for the 'Energy Star' Logo.

"Almost every front load washer will qualify, a certain amount of refrigerators are Energy Star, most dishwashers will qualify," Siemen said.

Siemen said a lot of people have been waiting for this program to begin, so he expects the money to go quickly.

"Once you add up all the rebates, the cost savings for the unit, the possible savings from the energy companies, it's a good deal," he said.

Sarver calls it a win-win for everyone.

"There's no downside to this, it will create jobs, the buyer is going to save money on electric bills, it's helping the environment," Sarver said.

So if you're in the market for a new home appliance, now is a great time to buy.

Once you register with the government, you have 14 days to make your purchase and send in the materials. You are only allowed one rebate per type of appliance, but can get more rebates if you buy a few different appliances. The program lasts until the nearly $9 million Michigan was awarded is used up.
