"We don't have any idea, we just don't know why it happened," Sgt. Robert Ott of the Ingham County Sheriff's Office said of Monday's fatal accident.

The reason a semi truck crashed into a guard rail and flipped over Monday on I-96 near Williamston Road is still a mystery to police.

"It's not icy and it's not foggy," Sgt. Ott said. "Witnesses said the truck just started going all over the road and then he crashed."

The driver, 56-year-old Stuart Conaway of Florida lost control of his vehicle and was ejected from the truck upon impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved.

In the aftermath, Eastbound I-96 was closed between Okemos road and Williamston road for more than eight hours. Drivers were diverted off the highway.

"We're asking people to get off at Okemos road to Grand River to Williamston road back to I-96," Sgt. Ott said.

The Ingham County Sheriff's Office said the reason the road had to be closed for so many hours is because the contents of the truck needed to be unloaded before they could tow it away.

"We have a local towing service that's hand unloading the trailer to get it up on its wheels," he said.

So while boxes upon boxes of cereal were being unloaded, the Ingham County Hazardous Materials Team found a solution to avoid having the truck's diesel fuel spill out onto the highway.

"What they decided to do is drill into the tank to drain all the fuel out before they put it upright," Ott said.

The State Police is investigating the accident with the help of Ingham County Sheriff's deputies and the Williamston police and fire departments.
