When people find health insurance they like -- they stick with it. Linda Beck has had Physicians Health Plan for 10 years now.

"I like PHP because the co pays are fairly low and I guess the thing I like the most is I don't have to get a referral," Beck said.

PHP of Mid Michigan is one option out of many offered to MSU employees, and for the most part, those we talked to said they're satisfied.

"It's been fine option for us," Jan Urban-Lurain said. "It's covered the costs as we've needed it."

"I think it's been good,"Harley Seeley said. "I haven't had any issues, coverage has been fine."

But things could be changing. In a major move Monday, Sparrow Health System agreed to sell PHP to Southfield-based Blue Care Network.

The Lansing-based health plan has more than 80,000 customers in Mid Michigan and 18,000 Medicaid HMO members.

Beck questions what this sale could mean for her.

"It worries me," she said. "I'm worried my coverage won't be as good."

A Sparrow spokesperson tells Newsten for now, not much will change. You can still use your health card and still go to your doctor. However, things will change when you go to renew your plan.

The Sparrow spokesperson said once a customer's contract with PHP is up sometime in 2010, the Blue Care Network will offer a similar plan.

He could not say if prices or coverage could change because each employer is different, but he said, the transition should be seamless.

Beck said she's hoping for the best.

"My hope would be if BCN is buying out PHP, I would hope my coverage wouldn't change," she said.

The sale still requires regulatory approval from the State before it is finalized, that should happen before the end of the year.

What does this sale mean for those who have contracts and PHP is their health insurance?

The Michigan Nurses Association tells Newsten nothing should change at all, even if and when BCN takes over until it's time to negotiate a new contract. For the MNA, that's in a year and a half.
