Need a new driver's license? Take a number. You'll have six fewer days to get it this summer as all state departments -- including the secretary of state -- will close to save money.

"We take in $7 million a day in our branches and in a cash-strapped state, that's important," Kelly Chesney, of the Secretary of State's Office, said.

But Terri Lynn Land -- who plans to run for Governor in 2010 -- said she can cut those days in half and still save the money required and relieve the burden on employees as well as customers.

"She's been able to achieve those savings through a budget reduction strategy and three furlough days," Chesney said.

But Chesney said the governor's office threatened "lights out" if the Secretary of State's office didn't comply.

"The governor's office was clear," she said, "They would pull the plug on our services."

The governor's office said they would turn the lights off if necessary because no department should get special treatment in times of sacrifice.

"They're not an island," Liz Boyd, the governor's spokesperson said. "We have an integrated state system. Yes, they provide services to customers at branches, but their support services, the computer systems, the office buildings -- those are state office buildings we expect to be closed during furlough days."

Plus Boyd said this is about shared sacra fices for all state employees, not only a few.

"It's not about the secretary of state's money, it's about tax payer's money and how we can save every penny," she said. "That's what this is about. We're all in this together."

So six days it is for the Secretary of State's Office -- plan accordingly.

Chesney says people can go online to renew licenses or things like that. Otherwise, people will have to wait until the offices are opened for other transactions.

The state furlough days are:

June 19, July 6, July 24, August 7, August 21, September 4th.
