For months now GM employees have lived on edge.

"We've heard a lot of rumors everyday and it's day by day in there," Delta Township GM Employee Kevin Carr said.

Now, the latest news to come down the pike? GM plants could shutdown for the whole summer.

"We heard this afternoon and it is still a rumor, that we would be shutting down from nine to 12 weeks to retool," Carr said.

"It's tough medicine, my heart goes out to the workers and the families," Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero said.

Bernero said while this news is a tough pill to swallow, it's definitely not surprising.

"The sales of cars follow very closely with the economy and so while we're in a recession, the car industry is more like in a depression," Bernero said.

The problem in a recession is people just aren't buying cars. So GM's response to shutdown production may be a way to move some extra inventory.

"When there is no demand, it makes no sense for the car companies to make cars," Bernero said. "That's the sad reality for us now."

"I'm sure that has a lot to do with it because inventories are so high," Carr said.

Carr has worked for GM for 25 years. He said the company has been down before and bounced back, and he expects it can happen again, especially in Lansing.

"We are a high tech plant and LGR is a high tech plant," Carr said "I think when everything boils down, I think we will survive."

Carr told News Ten there's a rumor going around the plant the Chevy Traverse may be coming to Lansing. That would be great for the area given the uncertain future of the Saturn and GMC brands.
