Do you know what crime is happening in your neighborhood, or your street even? The Jackson Police has that information, and now they're sharing it online.
"It's a growing trend to put information on the web so the public can access it 24 hours a day, anytime," Deputy Chief John Holda said.
The Jackson Police Department has partnered with a site called crimemapping.com. Once you specify the state and agency, residents, or anyone at all, can find out what happened, where and when.
According to the site,in the past week Jackson, there have been 189 crimes.
"You can look up assaults, breaking and enterings, robberies, larcenies, sexual assaults, homicides, arsons," Holda said.
The site has only been up and running for about a month and hasn't been publicized yet, but when News Ten told residents about it, they were all for it.
"It will let residents and neighbors know where the danger areas are in our city," Jackson resident J.J. Zamudio said.
"I think it would be very helpful," Rhonda Stump said, "that way people know what areas to avoid."
Holda said there's a point to all of this. If you put more information out there, maybe you get more tips. Then, maybe, you solve more crimes.
"We can use all the eyes and ears out in the community we can get," Holda said. "So this is just another tool, so the community is more informed."
The Jackson Police Department is one of three agencies state-wide using the site.
The city is still working out kinks in the system. Deputy Chief Holda tells News Ten the department has already received calls from residents who've seen the information online, and had some questions.
