SENEY, Mich. (AP) -- An official says a wildfire triggered by lightning has burned at least 1,500 acres of a wildlife refuge in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, leading to the expected closing of some trails and roads through the Memorial Day weekend.
Jennifer McDonough of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Wednesday that crews at Seney National Wildlife Refuge hope to contain the fire to about 2,500 acres.
The refuge covers 95,000 acres in northern Schoolcraft County, about 85 miles west of Sault Ste. Marie. The refuge includes the 25,000-acre Strangmoor Bog National Natural Landmark.
A lightning strike is believed to have started the fire Sunday. It grew Monday and continued to burn on Tuesday. Officials say dry conditions contributed to its spread.
No injuries or building damage is reported.
