LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan boaters and snowmobilers would be held to the same drunken driving standards as drivers under legislation introduced in the state House.

The bipartisan package of bills was introduced by Republican Reps. Matt Lori of Constantine and Dave Pagel of Berrien Springs and Democratic Rep. Andrew Kandrevas of Southgate. The legislation would set the legal blood-alcohol limit for boat, snowmobile and off-road vehicle operators at 0.08 percent.

The lawmakers say that under current law, people can legally operate snowmobiles and boats with a 0.10 blood-alcohol content.

Pagel says in a statement that snowmobilers "should be held to the same standards as drivers when it comes to alcohol consumption."

Lori says the bills would improve the safety of Michigan's lakes, snowmobile routes and off-road trails.

Every weekend we read about snowmobilers killing themselves racing through the woods and running into trees -- or each other. What difference does the law make? No one is out there to monitor their drinking or reckless driving other than their "friends" who are partying just as hard as they are before "having fun" on the snowmobiles. The same can be said for boaters in the summer, although there may be more patrols on the water than in the woods.

Yes, this is a good thing. There are just some things requiring a person's full focus, operating motor vehicles of any sort are some of them. (Operating power tools is best done sober as well.) Alcohol consumption is fine for many people, but it should be a stationary activity, combined with something also stationary, like eating.
