How many movies or songs did you download this month?
Maybe the better question is... how many did your neighbor?
"Cable internet is like water pipes," Donald Lovell, owner of Trouble Shooters in Lansing, said. "Everyone uses the same pipe, but depending on what your neighbors do, your speed could be affected."
So beginning October 1st, in an effort to crack down on internet hogs, the second largest internet provider will limit the amount of data residential users can upload and download to 250 gigabytes a month.
In a statement Comcast said, "the monthly data usage threshold will have absolutely no impact on 99 percent of our customers because their usage is well below the 250 gb in a month."
So how much is 250 gigabytes? Well Comcast said it's equivalent to about 124 movies and 50 million emails a month. That certainly sounds like a lot, but some say as technology develops, this cap could end up being drawback.
"This will hurt the people trying to use legitimate applications with streaming video, they might come home and find their internet off," Lovell said.
Other service providers like Verizon and Sprint already have a usage cap.
So whether you download with reckless abandon or simply check your email, your going to have to start keeping track.
